A big thank you to Share Design for featuring my current show The Opaque Skin of My Dreams on there Inspiration Blog.

...Using photography as a reference point for her subject matter, Melbourne based artist Sarah Hendy‘s work is known for revealing nostalgic and uncomfortable moments from everyday scenes. Her latest exhibition, ‘The Opaque Skin of My Dreams’ which is showing at Gallery Ecosse, follows this same philosophy, with a series of paintings that are regarded as ‘stirrings of the invisible’...

July 2013/  The Design Files

A write up on my painting practice from Lucy at The Design Files.

"Sarah Hendy is a Melbourne based artist whose creative practice has taken a few unexpected twists and turns. After initially studying sound and composition at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, Sarah felt compelled to approach her creative practice from a slightly different angle, and so I applied to study fine art at VCA. She started out working with sound installation, photography and drawing, but in her final year started painting – and has never looked back. ‘It’s the medium that I feel I am most expressive in, and I am charmed by its rich history’ says Sarah. ‘It continues to intrigue me with its fluidity and endless possibilities. It isn’t stagnant until it is finished, until it is completely dry, and even then it can change over time’."

July 2013/  Est Magazine

Studio Sisu has been featured in Est Magazine.

"Interior architect Mairead Murphy opened up Studio Sisu to Est recently to share the shared creative workspace she has designed, not only for her own multidisciplinary design practice, Mäike Design Studio, but also for creative, likeminded souls in need of a workspace that exudes light, space and positive flow at the core of its aesthetic. This warehouse conversion in the hipster locale of Northcote, Melbourne houses a handful of lucky designers who now call this their ‘office’."

June 2012/ Like thieves newly loosed in that dark electric opening at Chalk Horse by Strobed

Last week Melbourne born artist Sarah Hendy gave a lucky Sydney audience the chance to enjoy the opening night of her second solo exhibition. Chalk Horse opened it’s doors to the cold night to reveal menacing black walls and eerily lit artworks. As a side note, it was not easy to photograph.

Like Thieves Newly Loosed in That Dark Electric was an exhibition of detailed oil paintings on paper, canvas and hessian. Hendy’s imagery comes from stock photos, which she reinterprets in her own style. She invites the audience to create their own back-story for the images, rather than presenting a clear narrative in her body of work.

Chalk Horse was busy, despite the cold, and filled with art lovers soaking up the atmosphere.

The exhibition continues until June 30th, get along and check it out.

June 2012/ Chalk Horse

8 Lacey Street
Surry Hills NSW
21 - 30 June, 2012
12-6pm Wed - Sat

They heard somewhere in that tenantless night a bell that tolled and ceased where no bell was and they rode out on the round dais of the earth which alone was dark and no light to it and which carried their figures and bore them up into the swarming stars so that they rode not under but among them and they rode at once jaunty and circumspect, like thieves newly loosed in that dark electric, like young thieves in a glowing orchard, loosely jacketed against the cold and ten thousand worlds for the choosing.

Cormac McCarthy, All the Pretty Horses

Sarah Hendy’s practice of painting from photographic stock explores the strangeness inherent to the visual documentation of social mores, with an eye for the sense of menace that often animates the representation of the apparently mundane. Despite the obscurity of their source, we feel that we recognise these images, and it is impossible not to impose narratives upon the paintings as they beg to be understood and given a history.
